He Knew How He did Die

He knew. Years ago Michael Jackson and I were having a deep conversation about life in general. He may have been questioning me about the circumstances of my father's death. At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty,"I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he die." Fourteen years later I am sitting here watching the news. An ambulance leaves the driveway of his home, the big gates, the crowds, the coverage, the hospital, the cause of death and what may have led up to it and the memory of this conversation hit me, as did the unstoppable tears.

I never learned to do his moonwalk dance move, but like everyone else, I was blown away when I saw him unveil it on Motown's famous 25th anniversary TV special 1984. I was too shy a kid to get one of the red and black stripped jackets like the one he wore in the Thriller video, but I thought it was cool. I did however, have an afro jheri curl in 1979, when Jackson released his album off the Wall, which included jams like do not stop til you get enough and working day and night I was 10 and whenever the high school girls on my block told me that I was cute and looked like Michael Jackson, I blushed and took it as a huge compliment.

A Conventional Daddy

Michael Jackson was one of the sweetest souls I have ever encountered. He was generous and polite. And where you might expect to see children that were pampered and spoiled, his children showed none of this. I saw Michael Jackson multiple times with his children and thought that he was a very good father. Not only based on seeing him with his children, but also based on his children themselves.

They are very well behaved, respectful children, who seemed content in his company. I doubt if Michael Jackson cooked for them or parented them in ways that might be considered conventional, but you could see how much he loved them and how much they loved him.
